Procedure to Apply

After being admitted to the University through the Office of Admissions, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form must be completed every year as soon as possible after January 1 of each year. Your eligibility is determined one award year at a time starting July 1 through June 30 of the next year and any summer terms that your school considers part of that award year.

Before you get started filling out the FAFSA form on line, you need to have a PIN.  You can request one at http://www.pin.ed.gov. You'll need a valid Social Security Number to verify your information and locate your records. You'll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) after your application has been processed. Check the SAR carefully for any corrections that may need to be made. Any corrections should be made using FAFSA on the Web if you filed electronically.

When your FAFSA is processed, a formula is applied to the information you provided.  The formula used calculates your Expected Family Contribution or EFC. This is determined by your family's financial income and assets and is used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid. Your information is transmitted electronically to any school you indicated by entering the School Code.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES: If the student believes the student (and his or her family) has unusual circumstances that might affect the student's need for financial aid, the student should complete and submit the FAFSA and then notify the school's financial aid office. In some cases, the school's financial aid office may decide to take these unusual circumstances into account and adjust the student's cost of attendance or the information used to calculate the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The student must provide adequate proof to support any special circumstances.

Possible examples of unusual circumstances include:

  • Tuition expenses at an elementary or secondary school
  • Unusual medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance
  • A family member who recently became unemployed
  • Changes in income or assets that may affect the student's eligibility for financial aid.

IMPORTANT CHANGE:  FEDERAL TAX DOCUMENTATION that is needed for verification of a student's file. Effective October 1, 2003. local Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) will no longer provide tax return transcripts, except in emergency situations. Taxpayers can request tax return transcripts in two easy and convenient ways -- by phone or mail. They can either:

  1. Call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and follow the prompts in the automated system, or speak to an IRS representative or,
  2. Complete and mail Form 4506, Request for Copy of Transcript of Tax Form, to the IRS address listed in the form's instructions.

For emergency requests where a student cannot wait two weeks for mail delivery, a TAC will provide same-day service for a return transcript, but only when documentation of the emergency is presented. Examples of acceptable documents include an appointment letter from a government agency, financial institution of university with a very short deadline; proof of an Immigration and Naturalization (INS) appointment within two weeks of the request; or an airline ticket showing a departure from the United States within two weeks.

TAC has posted information on this topic on their website. We encourage you to use this website. This website can also be used if you and/or parents didn't file and the Office of Financial Aid requests a no tax filer form to verify your file.
